Who they are
Eli Gino is a reserve colonel who spent about 27 years in the Givati Brigade, commanded its reconnaissance battalion in the 2014 Gaza war and has been the brigade’s chief of staff in the reserves since October 2023.
He grew up in Jerusalem and joined Givati in 1997. Ofer Winter commanded the brigade while Gino led its reconnaissance battalion, and Gino says he fought alongside him in complex battles. On 1 August 2014 Lieutenant Hadar Goldin was abducted in Rafah in the battalion’s sector, and Gino has said he understood at once that a soldier of his had been taken. He was later deputy commander of the brigade and then deputy commander of the 80th Division, which holds the Egyptian border.
He returned to the brigade after 7 October 2023 as its chief of staff in the reserves and has logged more than 1,000 reserve days across the fronts of the war. He comments on security in the Israeli media, and in 2026 he joined Ofer Winter’s Amcha Israel.
